QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

You generally have much more access to server resources with VPS hosting as compared to shared hosting. While the various virtual machines are all sharing server resources, there are usually many fewer of them on a server in a VPS environment. You are alloted a much larger portion of the overall computing power and bandwidth.

A virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual machine sold as a service by an Internet hosting service.

A VPS runs its own copy of an operating system, and customers have superuser-level access to that operating system instance, so they can install almost any software that runs on that OS. For many purposes they are functionally equivalent to a dedicated physical server, and being software-defined, are able to be much more easily created and configured. They are priced much lower than an equivalent physical server, but as they share the underlying physical hardware with other VPSs, performance may be lower, and may depend on the workload of other instances on the same hardware node.

  1. Office emails - If you have multiple email users working from the same office (same connection IP address), then you will want a VPS. The reason is that shared and reseller plans limit POP and IMAP connections to 30 per hour per connecting IP.
  2. Mass emailing - If you advertise through email or have a large contact mailing list, you will want a VPS. The reason is that shared and reseller plans limit each domain name to sending 500 emails per hour.
  3. Custom installations - If you want to develop a custom hosting environment, or want to install something which is not compatible with our shared servers, then you will want a VPS. The reason is that shared and reseller plans do not allow you to change the included server hardware and software; we must provide a stable and consistent environment for every one on a shared server, and allowing changes will inevitably affect the other users.

To upgrade, please submit your request using our upgrade form. This request is a ticket, and all tickets will be addressed in the order in which they are received.

You will be billed a prorated amount for the remainder of the month at the time of the upgrade.

Example: If you currently pay 17.99 a month for the BASIC Shared Plan and want to upgrade to the STANDARD Shared Plan, which is R29.99 a month, that is a R12 per month difference. If you were half way into your billing cycle, you would only be billed R6 for the new plan for the current month. You will be billed the full R29.99 next month.
